2024 Summer 5 For The Fight Cancer Research Interns
The 5 For The Fight Cancer Research Internship Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute is an intensive, 10-week internship for rising juniors and seniors from select Historically black colleges and universities (HBCU). It is designed to provide a research experience and mentorship for students interested in careers in cancer research and attending medical school or related PhD programs. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, interns will complete an independent research project and present their work at the Summer Research Symposium organized by the Office of Undergraduate Research.
The 5 For The Fight Cancer Research Internship is a 10-week summer program where interns will receive the following:
- $5,000 stipend
- Round-trip air transportation from home city to Salt Lake City
- Housing and meal plan at University of Utah's Lassonde Studios, the University of Utah's housing for entrepreneurs and creators
- Weekend experiences within the beautiful Wasatch Mountains including social and outdoor activities (previous activities include riding ATVs, hiking, paddle boarding, baseball and soccer games, etc)
- Hands-on research in a leading cancer research lab
- Mentorship from a world-renowned cancer researcher at Huntsman Cancer Institute
- Research symposium where you both present and learn from your peers
- Professional development workshops

Applications will be reviewed by a committee with representatives from Huntsman Cancer Institute, Howard University and 5 For The Fight Foundation
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a rising Freshmen, Sophomores, Junior or Senior at Howard University, May 2024
- Willing to commit to 40 hours per week during the 10-week program May 27 - August 2, 2024
- Travel to and live on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah for the duration of the internship
- If working in a clinical setting, up-to-date vaccination records will be required
The application includes the following components
- Online form
- Personal statement addressing your interest in the program, career goals, personal and research- related background and skills and why cancer research is important to you
- Copy of your most recent transcripts (unofficial are accepted)
- Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, processor, or academic advisor- one focused on science or applicable experience and one about character
